Burner Cover

Gas water heater pilot will not stay lit after first time burner heats up water. What could cause this?

I light the pilot and turn the burner on. The burner cover is replaced so wind doesn't blow it out. The burner stays on and the water comes up to temp. The next time I go to use hot water it is cool and I find the pilot is out again. My pilot has a nice blue flame, so I doubt it is carbon build up. It is hard to believe it is a thermocouple due to the pilot staying lit and being able to get the burner to fire off. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have a bad gas valve and need to replace it, but you can try to replace the thermocouple
first which is inexpensive.
